LeapMI
A project in collaboration with the CTO and Project manager at North60. I was the only UX designer on the team.
An app to help patients get their medical cannabis with ease. A project for a start-up completed September 2020
Problem Space
Medical Cannabis is a strictly regulated prescription drug. Acquiring it is a cumbersome process the patient and difficult to monitor for the Doctor. Research concluded to the following pain points for patients:
The patient has to go through the hassle of finding a Health care physician who is comfortable prescribing medical cannabis.
They worry about getting safe and legal strands in the composition that they require.
There is a lack of choice in the dispensaries the patient can choose from. Changing their dispensary is also cumbersome because of the paperwork involved which increases wait times.
They fear judgment from the health care professional if they ask for a prescription for medical cannabis.
Goal
LeapMI will provide patients a hassle-free experience to obtain their medical cannabis. It is meant to reduce the whole process into three steps. It has the following key principles:
It must be accessible
It must provide a simple experience for patients to obtain their medical cannabis
It must protect the privacy of the user
It must help doctors and patients engage through the whole process, from prescription to delivery and follow-up.
Users
Three groups of users will use three sides of this app
Patients
Doctors
Suppliers
This project entry focuses on the patient journey from booking a virtual appointment to getting their medical cannabis prescription delivered to them.
Key Tasks
Connect a patient to a health care practitioner who is comfortable prescribing medical cannabis
Allow video calling between doctor and patient
Have doctors send patient's prescriptions directly to the supplier of choice on the network
Display patient's prescription on the app so patients do not have to carry the small government seal with them at all times.
Hi-Fidelity Mockups
The following iteration is the patient journey from
Booking an appointment with a doctor
Consulting with a doctor virtually
Receiving a prescription on the app and sending it to a dispensary for delivery.
New User Experience
The following are iterations of the sign up process. The app is intended to be referred to the patient by the Doctor. In this case, treating the patient like a stranger to the app is not ideal. Thus, the first option, 'Referred by Family Doctor' is added.
Final Mockups

Key Takeaways
A complicated sign in process may deter people from proceeding right in the beginning. The process has to be seamless and should not take more than 4 seconds.
The clinic suggestions that do show up should be listed in the order that's the best option for the patient, based on their location and other preferences.
Sometimes a series of screens adopting the most obvious way to complete a task may be the only way to do it.
Future Considerations
The app currently restricts the user to go through a series of screens to book an appointment with the health care provider. It may be nice to cut the whole sign in process if a person just wants to get an appointment at a walk in clinic.
It would be nice to see this app book all kinds of doctor appointments, not just for medical cannabis.
